  • White paint always modernizes everything. If your pine is shiny, it needs to be sanded. Good prep work always lasts better. Then use a good primer. I like Zinnser BIN because it is shellac based which means that it will block stains from coming through. If your pine has a lot of knots, I would paint those areas with clear shellac. They will yellow over time.

Then paint away. I like enamel paint for cabinets. Deco Art makes one that's sold at Home Depot that works well and is water based.

    Good luck!

I would suggest Benjamin Moore's advance paint ! This is a water based paint that dries like an enamel . Very durable ! Best of all no sanding or primer needed !!!

First you need to use a de glosser like Krud Kutter , it is a spray cleaner that gets off dirt, oil, grease , & polish. Tip - before you start your project take time to number each cabinet door /drawer I used a piece of masking tape. Also when you take off the hardware out each set in a separate baggie with the coordinating door # in the bag.

this might seem like a waste of time , but it will be a BIG help when you put the doors back up !!! Especially in an older home , if you don't mark the doors , it will take forever and they won't line of match up .

I would pick a color you like and new knobs or drawer pulls. I posted a tutorial with step by step instructions. My style is different, but the process is the same , if you want check it out, it's listed as : kitchen re do from ugly 1970's to vintage cottage.

    Good luck !!!

Lorna, this is one time I would recommend two coats of primer after you sand all the cabinets. Since you are trying to make unmatched cabinets to match, you need to give them an equal start. After the second primer has dried, you should be able to use any color paint you wish. Best wishes on your project. Why not photograph as you go and post on Hometalk when you are finished? ☺️
