Is in very bad condition with peeling contact paper and slatted boards underneath

  • Time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. I would remove the contact paper, remaining adhesive, clean, then prime and paint. Easiest and quickest way to update a kitchen.

Paint is the first thing like Naomie suggests. Painting cabinets, walls, wainscoting (slatted boards), new flooring, light fixtures.

    Hello Bea,

Remove the wall coverings sand prime and paint.

A fresh coat of paint is a remarkable update.

Once you get it all cleaned up, survey the shape of the material underneath. You may be able to lightly sand and then refinish which would be cheaper than painting.

  • Paint is a miracle worker. It almost instantly makes everything feel cleaner. If you need new cabinets, check your local Restore. They carry used building supplies that are pretty inexpensive, as well as tile and flooring.

  • If you can, remove that contact paper and evaluate the condition of what’s underneath. Make any repairs to that surface, clean it, and then I’d paint. New paint is a game changer, and it can be an affordable way to change the look of things. If you can afford it, new cabinet hardware can make a big difference too, but sometimes that can be pricey. I agree with the other commenter here though and think you can look at a local Restore for some of the things you may need at a lower cost.
