Caulking is very inexpensive. Is there a reason you do not want to use it?
Caulk is cheap, just get it from any hardware store or home improvement center along with a caulking gun. Homemade caulk will not perform or look as professional.

Shelly: caulking is super cheap and will look more professional!
I don't know of any reason not to use caulk. It comes in clear and colors now.
No homemade product will match a bought caulk since it is made specifically for the job at hand. It is very reasonable in price and is paintable, if need be.
