How can I update butcher block countertops?
I have a small butcherblock island which is where my electric cooktop is located...very plain...how can I update
Hi this is Peggy. From what I have read changing the color of you butcher block can be almost impossible. Sorry for the bad news, but I hate to see you waste your money or be unhappy with the result. It all depends on the type of wood you have to be able to darken or change the color of the butcher block. You may want to consult with a person that install or knows more than I do about this. You can sand and put a fresh coat of food safe oil on It. You can paint the base a fun accent color

To piggy back on Kelli's advice, you can clean and scuff with steel wool instead of sanding. Here's a link for oil. It will help preserve and richen the wood tones. Painting the base or applying paper (wall paper or contact paper) would be a way to liven it up also.
