Its never a good idea to paint over wax.

  • Nope. You can't paint over any type of wax. The paint has nothing to adhere to.

If your paint and wax has been on a piece for more than 30 days--the finish should be fully cured. You can paint over chalk paint that has been waxed with chalk paint once it has been fully cured. If you are concerned that it might need a little grip--sand your piece lightly with a fine grit sandpaper so the previous finish feels smooth. Finish your piece with wax or poly.

  • You can wipe the piece with mineral spirits to remove the wax, and then paint with chalk paint.
