How do I refurbish old linoleum countertops?

I have yucky linolium countertops. I want something alittle shiny and beautiful. I know about the kit you can buy where you can paint them, but was hoping for some other ideas if anyone has one thats not too horribly expensive. I've started the cabinets, so wondering about colors too.

You could consider mod podging something on to them. Any types of paper would do for mod podge. Old newspapers come to mind or even wall paper.

I heard an advertisement this morning where they recover your counters. I am very interested and will be checking this out if I can catch the commercial again. If it checks out, I will post.

Nothing other than replacement comes to mind that would be durable for counters.

remove the linoleum, and tile over the top of counter, you maybe able to tile over the top of linoleum, but check with someone at a tile store, this would make your counter tops heat resistant, gloss or flat finish, tiles come in so many different sizes and styles, it creates a lot of options, and you can do it yourself, serch on u- tube.
