We live deep in the NC woods and are visited by bear on occasion, but I've never seen one in our compost pile. However, I was concerned about it too when we moved here, so I just located the pile a reasonable distance from the house.
Our neighbors also have a compost the only thing different is the coffee grounds which they don't drink coffee, the bears are constantly into theirs have had none in ours. Good luck
