A-1 Sauce Christmas Ornament

My daughter has a thing for condiments. It doesn't matter if it's ketchup, ranch dressing, or her Dad's homemade BBQ sauce, she loves them. But, from all the sauces out there, A-1 is her very favorite. (Quoting from the Frank RedHot commercials, "She puts that **** on everything!") So, it was only natural that for Christmas last year, I was going to get her an A-1 ornament. Hmm. That was easier said than done.

I mean, there are tons of ketchup ornaments out there.

They've even started making Ranch dressing ornaments.

But no matter where I looked, I couldn't find an ornament for her one true love...A-1.

You know what that meant, right? That meant I had to make one.

So off to the liquor store I went.

No, no, no...not to drown my troubles away! You see, after some studying, I found that a Jose Cuervo bottle was the same shape as an A-1 bottle. To fit on the Christmas tree, though, I opted for the 50ML size.

As you are aware, A-1 is a dark brown color. I pondered awhile on how I was going to make the bottle a dark brown. That's when my husband told me how, when he was young, they would dye the parts to radio controlled airplanes using fabric dye.

Off to Walmart I went, for some brown Rit dye. I got an old pot, dumped the bottle of dye into it, added a little water, then dunked the bottle into the concoction. I turned up the heat and stirred.

Before long, I noticed a transformation was taking place. Yes, the bottle was turning (somewhat) brown, but it was also starting to MELT!!!

You know what that meant, right?

Back to the liquor store I went for another mini bottle of Jose Cuervo. (I'm starting to think the cashier is beginning to doubt my story about "using the bottle for a craft".)

After putting some more thought into it, I decided that I might acheive the desired look by pouring wood stain into the bottle, then draining the excess.

Unfortunately, after draining the excess and letting it dry, I was left with a big, streaky mess.

I had hoped for somewhat of a translucent appearance, but decided that it wasn't going to be possible. Therefore, I went to Michael's and purchased dark brown paint and I had to make yet another trip to the liquor store. ("Must be one heck of a craft you're working on.")

Next thing I did was find an A-1 logo on the internet and, by using the power of Photoshop, I made labels for my mini bottle. I even personalized it by changing the "Est." year. Once I was finished, I took my label to Office Depot so they could print it out with their awesome printers on the slick paper. You know, so it'd look legit.

Unfortunately, they were unable to print my creation (something about copyright infringement...blah, blah, blah), but I totally understood. Therefore, I brought it home to my cheap printer and printed it out on copy paper.

Although it could have looked so much better with the professional-grade laser printer and glossy paper, she absolutely loved it! And that's all that really mattered.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
