How do I pack to move?

If you are paying for the move yourself, then it could be as much as $2 pr pound.

For every object you are thinking about packing, ask yourself if it is cheaper and easier to purchase a replacement when you arrive, or to pay to have it shipped.

Pack one room at a time. Mark each box with enough information that you don't have to guess what's inside: Ex. Kitchen, utensils, Kitchen, baking bowls. Downsize as you are packing and donate or have a garage sale.

Be sure everything is padded. Label boxes. Tip for undamaged lamps and shades: place in large bos with padding in the bottom. On some part of the lamp that is below the shade, loop string or twine. Punch two horizontal holes in the side of the box at the level of the string. Run each end of string thru the holes and tie a knot so lamp stays vertical. Repeat on the other three sides of the box. This holds lamp and shade perfectly in the box, so nothing ever touches them. You could pack linens or clothing, even stuffed animals around the base of the lamp. However, NEVER trust movers to keep boxes upright or treat them as FRAGILE!

Once you do that then you begin the business of tackling one room at a time. I always have a pin for just essentials I use until the move. I also have a bin that will go in the car with me I call FIRST NIGHT/DAY ESSENTIALS: Sheets, towels, soap, toiletries. I always label my bins (I use bins more than boxes but either one) each item I put in the bin, I label on a piece of paper what is in it like: Kitchen: silverware; knives; mixing spoons; etc. Then sugar; flour; salt; pepper; c. sugar. Each item is marked on the paper and taped with heavy tape to the box or bin. It takes a little longer to do this, but believe me it is a lifesaver. All great suggestions here. Make a master list. Label, name and number your boxes - i.e. Master bedroom box 1 of __. When the room is packed, go back and add the second number. That way when you reach your destination, you will know if you are missing anything. Do not toss, recycle or give away boxes until you have unpacked it and crossed it off your list. Plus when you reach your new place, easier for the movers to get the right boxes to the right room.
