What size hardiebacker do I use before putting down tile?

i have a 1/2" sub floor and a 1/2" floor on top of that

do i use a 1/2 hardiebacker or 1/4 before i put tile down?

    If you have the room, is use the 1/2". The firmer the better. What's the other floor?

    I agree with Kelli, you will have less issues with the thicker cement board.

    I'd chose the thicker for long term best construction.

    Everything I have ever read is to put down a good solid backing such as plywood or the hardie board 1/2 inch thick and then use the orange pad which is glued down to that so that your tiles will not crack when you run over them with a heavy object such as a wheelchair.
