How can I makeover this bookcase?
Large open back brown bookcase, over 50 years old, needs new color, something to make it more appealing . Thought of whitewashing and distress it so brown shows thru some, but maybe adding a trim or enclosing the back? I like western decor so any ideas?

I think enclosing the back would be a good idea and also provide more stability. Paneling will be more in the western decor. You could even trim out with rough wood like this gun cabinet.

Easy to paint and distress by lightly sanding , using chalk paint. Don't confuse with chalkboard paint ! It comes in many colors , goes on easily , goes a long way. Then lightly sand it here and there to let the brown show through. You can cut a piece of wood to make a back for it. You can paint the back of it or wallpaper it ( with a distressed brick textured paper) . You can place nice baskets on some of the shelves.

I would add a backboard painted a fun color, leaving the bookcase color as is.
Use a thin plywood 1/4th inch thick (also called luan) to back it. Paint, stencil, or wallpaper before installing to give the case a fresh look.
