How do I paint or update my red brick fireplace?

Clean the brick well and let dry thoroughly before starting. Prime first just to be sure nothing bleeds through. Then apply your final color.
Yes you need to prime. Depending on the type of brick you are painting, it will literally drink up the paint.
I did not prime mine when I painted the brick. I used a dry brush technique so I ended up with a rustic look rather than solid white.
