How do I finish off my windows?

The home I bought has unfinished windows, i.e., no sills and just bare wood in the window inset. Is this something I could do myself?

This would depend on your skills. Can you post a picture? Then you could get some more specific advice. You can enclose with wood, tile, sheetrock, and probably other materials (just can't think of any at the moment).

Sure can. Here is what other Hometalkers did.

We were in a home like this. My husband put in smooth 2 x 3's and then painted them to match the wall. It gave me a little sill to set some small herbal plants too. It really decorated it nicely. Hope this helps

It sounds easy and doable. Thank you.

    Jeanine,

When you say "no sills" do you mean on both the outside and inside? Just for clarification, the inside sill is called the stool and the trim underneath it is the apron. Make sure you insulate around the window opening first and prefinish your trim before installing. If you choose farmhouse or craftsman style trim, it is much easier to install then mitered corner trim because all the cuts are straight. It's a lot of detail work, but a fun project and a great way to build your skills. Lots of tutorials on YouTube how to do this. Good luck!
