I've thought about painting the board part white, but I also would like it smoother and easier to clean. I want to keep the cabin feel.

220 Sand paper is what you need. If you want to paint or leave it as is, sanding will make it so much smoother.

Your local hardware store will have sand paper in the paint department. 220 grit in sheets or a sanding block. The block will help to get in the corners. Just go over the whole surface lightly sanding, wipe down with a tack cloth to get all dust particles from sanding. Finish with stain and or an poly clear finish.... or paint.

The surface should be a lot smoother.

I would use stain with the poly finish in it. I used it on my kitchen cupboards. Turned out great

I would suggest getting an inexpensive electric sander (I got mine at Walmart) to make things so much easier!

Use a satin or semi-gloss paint. A few coats should make it plenty durable to be able to be washed.

    Hi Kerri

You can still brighten up instead of painting the whole wall opt to paint only the trim, or vise versa. You will still be keeping the rustic look that you like.

that what I was thinking ,but couldn't find any examples of it having been done.

You can lightly sand them and stain them alight gray to keep that cabin look.

Fill in the centers of each panel. Wrap any fabric around cardboard strips and attack to wall with staples down the edges which you can cover with a dot of paint, if it shows. Burlap would be good as it fits that cabin look you want to keep and comes in colors. Then you can vacuum it off or sweep it. Putting it onto cardboard makes it easy to change or remove without damaging your wall.
