Hi Trudy, if you don't want grass there are many things you can do. You can go the chemical rout and spray it throughout the growing season so it dies and won't grow back. That would be something you would have to do probably monthly though and would get costly.
A longer term solution would simply be to cover the ground with something. I would dig out all the sod down to the base dirt layer and then cover it with landscape fabric. After that you have lots of options for ground cover such as mulch, stone, pebbles, pavers etc.
Pull it before it gets very far into the garden. Clean out what it is in there, making sure that you get the roots, especially if the grass travels by the root system. Remove them at least to the edge of the garden and you can catch them as they come back into the garden.
If you're garden is already established, pull out all of the grass that you can. Place edging along the outer edges of your garden to help keep it out. You'll still have to pull weekly but that is normal!
Grass grows under ground, the more you remove the tops(mowing) the more it spreads, so unless you get the entire root system (almost impossible) you will always having it come back. Spray it with Round-Up. It is absorbed thru leaves into plant then into root system. Get the concentrated & mix yourself it works better, add food coloring so you can see where you have applied it. Put nozzle directly on plant you want killed then spray it. Do not use in in wind,don't get in wet spray(safe after dry),mix where you are spraying or rinse/water down areas you spill it,wear gloves read the directions.
