Hello Dorothy! I think it will vary depending on the area where you live but here is a good article to get you started in estimating costs for owning a horse.

    Basic info.

Do you have at least 4 acres of land? in grass! The horse will need at least that much in summer. In winter you will need to replace food source with Hay, grain feed. Then you have vet costs and cost of medication to avoid mosquito bourne diseases. Also need to see a farrier at least once a year to have hooves trimmed and new shoes put on. Of course you might be able to see manure for fertilizer.

Other option: board horse at a stable but will still have food, vet, and farrier to consider.

Horses are a herd animal and need companionship from other animals or people on a constant basis. While a nice thing to have it's not always nice for the horse.

It's been many years since I helped care for a couple of ponies an uncle owned. I always wanted my own horse but could never afford one.

Check your local farm supply stores to find out the cost of hay. While there, look at saddles and other tack and their prices. Check the prices of grooming aids, horse blankets, wormers....Call boarding stables to find the cost of boarding a horse. Call a local shoer to find out how often and how much it costs to shoe a horse. Call a farm vet to see what a visit from him costs. Unless of course, you have a horse trailer to take the horse to the vets. The costs go on and on....It's also one of the most rewarding things I have ever done - own a horse!

There's an old saying "I used to be wealthy, now I have horses." It's very true!

Don't understand how this is a Do It Yourself question. Did you check with your local government about OWNING a horse?
