How To Make An Easy Modroc Christmas Bowl
Modroc is Plaster of Paris impregnated gauze which is easy to use and shape, and is great for making sculptures – it’s basically the same stuff as they use when they put a cast on a broken bone. It sets quickly, and dries hard.
The kids have used it in the past to make sculptures by wrapping it around wire, this time we decided to use it to make bowls.
How To Make An Easy Modroc Christmas Bowl
We used balloons to get our Modroc bowl shape. To hold the balloons steady we sat them in upside down flower pots.
We cut strips of the Modroc (Amazon), dipped it into water, and then smoothed it over the balloons to make the bowl shape. The Modroc clings well to the balloon if you only build up one layer at a time.
Once you have completed each layer let it dry before adding the next.
The layers only take 30 mins or so to dry before it is firm enough to add the next.
We did two layers for our bowls. The bigger bowl used up one whole roll of Modroc, while the smaller one had about a third left over. We were using 6cm x 2m rolls to give you an idea of how far each Modroc roll goes. My daughter also added a foot to her bowl, as we thought that it may be a little unstable due to its shape.
Once the bowls were dry, they lifted easily off the balloons. The dried Modroc is easy to cut with scissors, if you decide you want to trim your creation in any way.
The kids then painted them with gold and silver inside before adding a glittery layer. We found it useful to place the Modroc bowls back on the balloons to paint the outsides.
Once the bowls were completed we filled them with Christmas Pot Pourri made out of pine cones, bark, cinnamon sticks, seed heads, star anise and dried orange slices. Please check out our Drying Orange Slices and Peel tutorial to see how it easy this is to do!

This stuff is great for making face masks. Remember to cover face with Vaseline before starting to place strips.
