How do I get rid of pidgeons in the attic?

How can I get rid of pidgeons in my attic? Exterminator/bird removal companies won’t do it, even if they advertise they do. We cannot figure out how they are getting in. They’ve been there a number of years now. I don’t want to kill them. I just want them to leave & not come back. A fake owl worked for a week. Then they just started knocking it over. Please help! Thank you!

You can accomplish this via a number of tactics, from the use of one-way exclusion devices to physical removal.

Using one way exclusion is an easy way to get rid of the pigeon without making them leave the area where they know. They can continue to live in their native area but not in your attic. It is also easy for you since you will not have to deal with the pigeons in the cage or the relocation process. The only thing is to ensure that you do the exclusion in the right situations and make sure that there is no other way that the pigeons will get back in the attic.

The one way funnels are made so that they will look like a normal funnel. They are made using mesh wire or holes and they are not that large, so the pigeon will be able to go out but are not able to enter in the other end. The first entry is big enough to let the pigeon enter into it, and the other one is small enough so that the pigeon cannot pass through it from the outside.

If you can get into the attic, apparently a strobe light will deter squirrels so it may deter pigeons.

We had someone play a loud fog horn type device in our attic which made the squirrels leave. You really need to find how they are getting in and patch it up to make it work long term. Just don't trap any inside!

  • Sorry Joni, your exterminators are downright lazy or don't want they money. First you need to find where they are getting in. If you go up in the daytime, you will see where they go to get out. Stay up there long enough to encourage them to leave. Then when all gone, plug up the hole and clean up all the mess. Not a pleasant task but can be done.

Have you checked edge of roof at all corners; where your attic vents are located (sometimes squirrels push these louvers apart to a point where all manner of todents and birds can enter; chimney areas inside and out, where whole house electricvent is located in attic (if you have this); siding; where house and siding meet; etc.

Have you tried attaching mylar balloons or "flash tape" around attic areas, outside?

Also try a fan that will cause strips of white fabric to flutter. Birds apparently detect this as a sign of danger and will leave.

Try to determine if seed of any type is attracting them, and secure it. No bird feeders to avoid attracting them.

Install pointed strips on your roof ridges to dissuade pigeons from sitting there.

Trim any nearby trees or sturdy branches that could support their weight.
