How do I paint over linoleum?

There was a neat little guy on hgtv years ago. He cleaned and rinsed the linoleum. Glue and patch any injuries. Then he put a good coat of light color acrylic paint. He had a set of the blue willow style plates. He scanned and printed them in various diameters. Decoupaged them on the floor. He used layers of clear sealer between as he layered some. They looked like they were floating on the floor. Then a couple coats of sealer.

He he used the painters tape and Maddie geometric designs. He liked doing those on a diagonal. He said square rooms weren’t always square. Doing on the diagonal fooled the eye and made the room look larger.

I have hardwood floors. The last owners left we with black water stains. I sanded the floor the best I could, especially over the black areas. Painted some Clorox over the black and let it sit. Then rinsed the next day with baking soda water. I got a small Fluor de li (sp) design. I laid the stencil over the center of the stains and used gold to stencil with. Then I used 2 coats of the medium dark sealer with stain. You don’t notice the gold, they are sorta random but kinda a pattern. The darker varnish really toned down the gold and only one black stain I’d still noticeable.

I mention the wood floor because I used accent color and “antiquing” —to hide any places in your linoleum that aren’t perfect. My concrete counter top is sponge painted with fabric paint then a coat of commercial grade floor resin. It’s about 20 years old. Still looks like new. NO knives but no other special care.

Step one: Clean with White Lightning

Step two: Sand with fine sandpaper

Step three: Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint

Step four: Use Gator Hide for a water-resistant finish
