Buy an old headboard the size or shape you want. Habitat and Goodwill have them all the time for cheaper than buying wood and making it from scratch. I saw a nice one yesterday for $10. Glue and wrap batting to front and sides. Get fabric. Wrap around headboard, staple to back.

When I made mine, I used half a sheet of plywood, quilt batting that was crib size (or you could use an old mattress pad), glued the batting to the wood and stapled a flat sheet over the whole thing. Years later, it still looks great. The lumber yard often has marked down partial sheets.
