What is the least expensive way to cover the sheetrock around the bathtub so we can start using the shower?

Tile is best, but there are some thin plastic sheets available at the home stores that can be glued onto the wall. You need to ensure all seams are sealed WELL, or you will be wasting your time and money as well as giving mold a place to grow. I would remove sheetrock and install cement board in its place.

If you have installed a new bathtub you can usually buy the coordinating wall enclosure that will give you a tub/shower unit.

You shouldn't have sheet rock in a shower. It will deteriorate and mold.

  • I don't recommend sheetrock in a shower, so hopefully it's on the wall next to the shower, and not inside the shower? Then you can just paint it. If it's in the shower, I'd recommend replacing it with GoBoard or cement board and tiling it.
