How do I take care of butterfly bushes in the winter?

I found this info for you:

"Mulch the plants generously to protect them during the winter. Many gardeners prune their butterfly bushes all the way to the ground as winter approaches. When the bushes break dormancy the following spring, give them some compost and fresh mulch. If you didn’t prune during the winter, it’s okay to prune just before a flush of new growth appears."

I used to cut mine down to about 2' above ground or lower in the fall. It is a good time to thin them out. They always came back to above 6' high.

I'd go ahead and prune them down now. Good luck!

Never prune mine. Only trim to keep their shape. Grew into a beautiful property divider. Keep them between 6' - 7'
