What is the difference between window glazing & caulking?

You should only have to do it once. Caulk can be painted over and there is a difference since caulk has some elasticity to it.

Glazing is a putty that finishes the glass to the frame on outside. You do it when it starts to fall out. Must keep it painted with the outside frame. Chalk comes in a tube and used to fill in small cracks where different materials or moldings meet, like crown molding to the wall and ceiling.

Window glazing is a putty that is use to hold in glass and seal from the weather. Caulk comes in tubes and basically is a flexible acrylic or rubber based compound. Window glazing needs to be done when it starts to crack and fall out. What I do is remove the glazing when it starts to fail and replace it with paintable caulk. The caulk stays flexible and lasts longer than glazing.

caulking is used to seal cracks; usually around/between wall and window or door frame. Also used to seal things like seam between tub/sink and wall or around faucets. used as needed if it dries out and crumbles away. Glazing is a similar product that is used to hold glass in place for windows. It does last a long time but sometimes needs a re-do if not taken care of. A coat of paint helps it hold and not dry out over time. If the glass is rattling you might want to re-do it.

Sally Anny. Have been using caulk instead of glazing putty for decades. It does not break down like glazing putty. It actually starts to peel. But it does last longer than glazing and creates a much better seal. Removing broken glass the caulk peels off with the glass. Never had any wood come off with it.

John Biermacher. Check the replacement pane. Sometimes the rubber seal between the glass panes just sticks out enough along the edges to create a good seal. It won't hurt to put a small bead of caulk. Use 100% clear silicone caulk so you can wipe off any squeeze out.
