Diane: There are a number of chalk paints on the market. Annie Sloan is the Cadillac -- altho it's expensive, a little goes a long way (a quart would do it probably.)
There are some big box store brands, but the quality is poorer.
I would suggest that you soft wax after painting. It will give it a finished look -- and is very quick and easy.
DecoArt Americana Decor Chalky Finish is an excellent alternative to Annie Sloan. Buy it with a coupon at Jo-Ann or Michaels!
There are recipes for diy chalk paint. I would try making a small amount, try it on a piece of scrap wood and if you like it make more. Way cheaper than buying chalk paint.
I second DecoArt, but Annie Sloan is good too, just more expensive. I think a quart of Annie Sloan would do it, you’ll maybe need a little more if you’re using a different brand. I’ve also done the DIY chalk paint on many projects due to budget and it works well too. As a cheaper alternative to chalk paint, you can do it with cabinet paint by Valspar. No need to seal it. Here is hownInpainted my bathroom cabinets.
