DIY Faux Coral Glass Candleholder

During an aha moment, you know the one you have while perusing through a magazine or shopping at a favorite store where you say, "oh, I love it," but I can probably make that. Then after much thinking and sleepless nights you actually find a way to put it all together. Yay, man! That's what happened to me when I saw pictures of a coral hurricane on Frontgates website. So pretty, but too expensive for me at $175.

I had made a starfish bowl and also a wired candleholder (you can read about on my blog) and remembering how I did those two helped me put the faux coral candle holder together.

Using 16 gauge white cloth wrapped stem wire as the foundation, Wrap four stems around a glue bottle to get spiral shapes.

Gently pull the spiral rings apart and connect the ends forming a circle. Insert the glass candleholder to make sure of the sizing.

Close the loops with needle nose pliers and make "feet" by squeexing the loops tightly together to hold the glass container. Insert another stem wire forming a circle through the loops for added support.

Next, Add different lengths of stems in random patterns to mimic the shape of coral, tying the connections with floral wire.

Then wrap the connections with masking tape to avoid wire rust.

Mix together a homemade flour, glue and water clay (Youtube) that dries hard as a rock. *See blog for more info. Cut off a bit and . . .

roll into stems and apply to the stems, one section at a time with water and a brush.

Satisfied with the overall look, paint mod podge over the entire surface to seal and let dry. And finally, finish with a layer of white chalk paint for a natural look
