How to add wall moldings to my dining room to mimic high end work?

Would like to add the type of "picture frame" molding under the existing chair wall and above my baseboard molding, but don't know how to start. If anyone can explain to someone with minimal skill level would certainly appreciate it.

Hi Paul. Did you know you could buy those frames already put together? You just attach them to the wall, caulk around the outside and inside with paintable caulk and paint. The frames (they're made of pvc, but painted who can tell?!) are sold at the big box stores and can even be special ordered to different sizes. Nothing can be easier. Happy DIY'ing!
This is not a difficult project even for the DIY. Decide what kind of moulding and how wide you want it and then brad nail it to the walls. You can glue it but I do not recommend this because if you ever decide to remove it, it will take off all of the paper from your drywall. You will need to miter the corners so a wooden miter box and a sharp hand saw, If you do not have a power saw, will do the trick.

If you want to do this yourself a miter saw is crucial. A chop saw can pay for itself when you put it up against a professional install. If you are less handy that power tools required you can buy premade pieces. In the end you will discover that most walls are not plumb and level so have a paintable caulk handy to cover up the gaps.
