any input on cordless driver/drills for basic use for a novice?

Hi. Cute. Use pvc moulding. It's flexible. Painted you'll never know it's pvc. Sold at the big box stores or online. Happy DIY'ing!
1/2” pvc plumbing pipe with T’s & elbows. The cutting tool & glue are good for years.
It can be flat or be pitched like a roof.
I would paint it to match & would make “socks” or sleeves of fabric to slide on each piece, as I assembled it- to cover the PVC. Then I would attach the “veil” with small Velcro or snaps onto the premiere of the frame.
This is easier for me than working with wood and this won’t rust like metal.
PVC pipe. Four pieces for uprights attached with those u-shaped pipe holder things. Four pieces with angles on top of those to attach 'arms' to make the top. Use sheer fabric of some sort to make the canopy. It can have velcro tabs to attach it to the PVC frame so it's easy to put on and take off for washing or repair.
Here's low cost using wood or dowel rods (scroll forward after bed making section) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQOoujIOwJI Canopy curtains https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu8OqQ2eekU
No, leave it as it is, just clean it up and refinish it. Make some frilly bed clothes.
The recommendations for using dowels or PVC are good.
It is difficult to tell from the photos but if the corners of the cradle are right angles I would use short length of outside corner (or wooden corner cards) to form a pocket that transition to the PVC/dowels. Hope this makes sense.
Use a hula hoop for the frame
Use thin moulding to frame. Then cut embroidery hoops (size dependentt) in half. Attach cut edges to moulding and drape or shir lightweight fabric to hoops.
