You can "trim" or "deadhead" roses all throughout the growing season to promote more blooms. "Pruning" is typically done in late winter to early spring before they start leafing out for the season. I an in zone 9 and prune in late January to early February and have my first blooms by Easter. Here are some great sites with helpful tips!

To trim roses, look for the first set of five leaves under the bloom and cut right above them. Do this throughout the season and your rose bush will bloom over and over!
Depending on where you live, I live in Michigan and I don't prune my bush until next spring. But some people prune in late Fall then cover their bushes. You can always check with your local farm and garden stores they usually have someone that can tell you when is the best time.
