I was just telling Wendy this. Ants only come in for food and warmth. Spiders come in to dry off after a stinging rain. So what you do for ants is: any cereal crumbs you have, at the end of the bag, you toss these in your garden for the ants rather than in thd trash. Same goes for any other sweet waste: Toast Crumbs, etc. Also you scoop up any non-parasitic intruders with a paper plate and gently put these outside, Why? Ants, Spiders and many other insects do bury their dead. If you kill them these go missing and the ants will come looking for the body. Atop that Ants pee along the route and leave pheromones, so if you do not return them alive Outside where they belong you got alot of work attempting to cover up the trails that the other ants will surely follow if the Lost Brother doesn't return home.
If they are the little black ants (sugar ants I believe) they are a real pain. Even though I am almost obsessed with keeping the kitchen counters spotless they still seem to appear about once a year.
I found one of the simplest things to do was to buy a bottle of Terro at my local farm supply store. It looks like Karo syrup but is not for people of pets to eat. The ants are attracted to the sweetness and take it back to the nest where it kills them.
Just have to keep it out of the reach of pets and children.
I was so grossed out when I found ants in my pantry a few years ago that I took everything out clean it and when I put stuff back I put flour, sugar, etc. in gallon plastic bags. I rinse off a bottle top before putting it back now. Haven't seen an ant for some time now.
It's a thick liquid like Karo Syrup. You just put a tiny amount on a piece of cardboard and they take it back to their nest. And after a few days they are gone.

What type of ants, as fire ants have a more specialized treatment.
Where are you located?
Typically, you can place baits of "Terro", or cornstarch and borax where you find ants.
Wiping walls and counters, door thresholds with distilled white vinegar and dish detergent liquid should eradicate ants' scent trails.
Obviously, all foods, grains, pet foods should be in secured containers.
Wipe your dishwasher regularly to remove food residue.
Run ice cubes and lemon in garbage disposal to keep it clean.
Wipe sinks and faucets of all food/beverage residue.
