How do I fix my hot water tank?

If Bettiy's links don't give you the answer you need, I would look at having a pro check it out to be safe. It may be something small to needing replacement.

Hi Deborah. I'm Cindy. I consulted with my husband for this issue. He said to start with the most simple solution first. So, check your breaker first to make sure it's not tripped. Switch the breaker to turn it off and turn it back on. Since there are no leaks, he believes this problem is electrical. You may need the help of an electrician. You probably need to replace the heating element. Take the cover off the area where you see the screws (it's probably a panel). Our electric water tank at our cottage has two heating elements. Easy to take out. You can pretty much tell if it is ruined. Take it to your local hardware store, buy a replacement, put it in and you are back in business. Cost is probably $10-20/element. Drain the tank first, just to be on the safe side.

Forgot to add. As a single woman at the time, I learned that you only need two things to be completely independent: AAA membership and know your hardware store man by name. Those people know how to do everything and have the patience of Job!

You need to change one or both elements most likely. Also use a water hose to drain the tank and get rid of all the sentiment that settles over time. You can find instructions on goggle. Good luck.

With electrical check breaker/fuse box first. For water heater first question is how old? Sometimes better to just replace them. Every year or two they should be drained to get rid of sediment that accumulates and cuts down on efficiency; makes it harder to heat the water. This should be done especially if you have well water. Granny's lines, pump, and tank got so filled with sediment they had to have new ones put in. Sediment killed two water heaters and we started heating water in pots on top of stove.

Overall the best thing I ever did was buy a book on home repairs and a few tools to go along with it.
