  • What all is up there? Like an old house with grandma's treasures or just insulation and dust?

    • Lucky for you! Donate to charity, have a garage or attic sale and make a few dollars, offer to your crafting friends to upcycle or make over. Or give away on sites like freecycle.org or on Nextdoor.com. Just last week I scored a bunch of free stuff from one of my neighbors off of Nextdoor.com. Who knows, maybe your neighbors, friends and co-workers might want some of it.

I’d install a powered (electric or solar) gable vent, first.

Then what are you trying to clean?

there are companies like Junk Removers who will come and take everything away.

    • Before you "junk" the items, look for hidden treasures! You wouldn't believe what people trash, that are actually worth upcycling or are worth money!

Nextdoor.com or freecycle.org are good ways to get rid of items and not have them end up in a landfill. There is a difference between trash and reusable items.

when my father in law died and we cleaned his attic, we found money stashed everywhere If it's not YOUR attic, better check everything.

  • Hi Molly - This is one of my favorite articles on cleaning, organizing and decluttering. It really breaks down the steps of the process, and even includes an interview with TV show Hoarders star Matt Paxton. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

The house was built in 1840 and we are the fifth generation and I am 52 and my husband is 72 it is time to purge it so if god forbid something happens we have no children and we don’t want strangers having to go through it all. I’m sure there are some great treasures up there I just need some motivation and encouragement

    • Invite a local antique shop owner or appraiser over to go through your stuff. You never know what you might be sitting on that is worth a few bucks or a lot of money. I live alone and am going through the same thing, want to sell off the items that are worth money and not worry about the rest.
