How can I hide an ugly extractor fan?
Hello hometalkers. I rent a property and so cannot remove an old extractor fan above the stove. It longer works but would require an electrician to remove it. I've been trying to think what I could make to hide it. I have been given permission to paint walls but can't work out how to hide this. Any ideas??

I would build a hook-on shadow box, and make it look like a stereo speaker. Paint it to match the wall, use a compatible fabric front. Just lift it off when you move.
Thank you that's a great idea!
You. Outdoor hang shutters and a curtain make it look like a window draw or paint a picture of clouds and the sun birds so it looks like your looking out a window
I'd put a square box around it, and stencil it with some kitchen ideas. Maybe a coffee pot with 2 ,mugs, or anything else. Put a square box around it and use the top part for a shelf, and pot holders across the wood. Aloha!
The electrician would only be at your house 15/20 minutes only a service call probably less than 100. Dollars but fan gone and all safe now fill in with Sheetrock and paint
Cover the plate area with a drop down plate which hides the full dimension of the whole fan area. Any exhaust will vent in through the spaces on the side.
If it suits your style, perhaps a pretty basket (as part of a collection of baskets?) hung opening to the wall? Or a rectangular basket mounted just under the fan, then filled with artificial greenery that sticks up enough to hide it? Would love to see the solution you choose!
😀 C Crow has a great idea. Maybe if baskets aren’t your style try a collection of metal bakeware. Spray painting the pans, molds etc would be an opportunity to add pops of color. When I saw the fan I thought the spaces between the blades looked like a fun place to paint a color wheel or even an ombré effect. And yes please, I too would love to see the solution you choose. Happy New Year
Ask the landlord if (s)he would have it removed. If it doesn't work, it's just allowing heat & AC to escape. Raises the electric bill. Offer to do all the arrangements. I have been a landlord and the time dealing with this kind of stuff drove me crazy. Ask if there is a preferred company/person to do the work.
I think you may be putting lipstick on a pig. Ask the landlord to discount your rent for the cost of removing this eyesore. The outside section can be stuffed with insulation and closed off with a board. Then you can put whatever you like above your range.
Lauriane maybe you can cut a circle out of plywood and design a clock face?
I would hang a wooden canvas print over it and add a shelf over and/or under the pic. This is what I did to mine. Mine is hidden under the wine pic.
These are awesome ideas thank you!!
