Usually it goes from the range all the way to the hood. If you want an easy solution, I've used the self-adhesive range backsplash product that works very well. Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing:
Inoxia SpeedTiles Hexagonia Stainless 29.61 in. x 30.47 in. x 5mm Metal Self-Adhesive Range Backsplash Mosaic Tile (6.26 sq. ft.)
It can be a bit awkward, but can be done without removing the stove. See if these tips help.
It would be so much easier if you slide the stove out of the way since you need to get the backsplash material level with the top of your ledge on your counter top which will be hidden by the stove itself. Go all the way up to the range hood, if you have one.
