Spring is the best time to divide hostas, when they first start coming up. We have done this for over 20 years and have not had any problems.

Spring, Summer, early Fall best times. So they can take hold and root.

Hi 1cs. I'm afraid so. Wait until spring has sprung to dig up and divide your hostas. If you try to do it now, the ground is really hard and when you transplant your hostas, or anything for that matter, the dirt won't fill in around the roots and there will be air pockets and your roots will dry up and die. If you water them, you will get ice in the voids where the dirt doesn't fill in and your roots will freeze and die. So, I'd let them be until you can work the soil. Don't be in a rush to do it too early, as they say, "haste makes waste" :) Good luck
