If you're having trouble when they are hanging with clothes, my advice is to toss them and gift yourself with some new hangers. Even plain plastic ones stay apart easier and they aren't that expensive. Plus there are specialty hanger for almost every thing. I hope that helps.
Oh my yes, wire hangers are the bane of my existence. Hate it when they get all tangled up. We made small little covers for them. It's quite easy to do. Use a wire hanger as a template and cut two pieces of fabric that's about an inch wider than the triangle shape of the hanger. Sew along the top of the triangle leaving a small hole for the hanger bit to go through. It definitely helps. Sorry about the picture, but it's the best way to try and explain When we store our wire hangers we put the bottom triangle bits in a plastic bag and tie the handles of the plastic bag around the curved hanging bit to keep them neat and tidy.
I recycle my 'wire' ones into straight pieces of wire to be used for odd/end projects and replace with the large gauge plastic ones from WalMart --- they don't tangle, won't rust/stain if you hang damp clothes on them to air-dry; some have 'hooks' for hanging a belt or scarf with the shirt/pants/skirt; some have clips to hold pants/skirts and the matching tops...
Hi Mac! Since I have moved many times in my adult life, I usually tie about 10 together, and each of those piles I place in a plastic bin marked HANGERS on the outside. Here are some other ideas.
I have all my extra hangers (and sometimes there are a ton!) in my basement. I have them lined up hanging from a pipe in the basement. They are easy to reach and can be easily used and hung back up.
