I would recommend using lots of white for two reasons... 1) It will make the space feel more open, and 2) Most farmhouse style spaces begin with a lot of white and then have darker accents and perhaps a few small pops of muted color. You could paint the walls white and and then add some light grays. Texture is also an important element of the farmhouse look. Good luck!
I too have small living room in bungalow. Trying to sell off excess furniture and other items. Once furniture sold that I want to sell then bring over from storage dressers and sideboard. I painted walls in living room egg shell, when I moved in took up wall to wall and found wood flooring, well used in some parts.
