How do I paint furniture?

I am getting ready to paint my grandmothers old hutch. How do I start? What grit sand paper do I use? It has never been painted and I'm not sure how to begin!

Here's a good post with pros and cons for different kinds of paints you can use on furniture: https://refreshliving.us/best-paint-furniture/

The directions will vary a bit depending on which type of paint you choose.

Are you sure you want to paint a family heirloom? I would restain it. I have never painted a family heirloom, just stripped and restained them, mine date back to my great grandmothers small drop down desk (she passed in the sixties at one month before 100 years of age). My daughter, who will most likely be the one to get the antiques has already researched the care for the furniture and how to restain if needed. I think she would shoot me if I painted "her" furniture.
