How do I remove stain from my kitchen cabinets?

Remove and label doors, sa&nd down to bare wood, tack cloth well, then restain.

You might consider using gel stain as long as your are going darker. You won't have to do as much prep work--but you will have to do some sanding--but you don'thave to go down to bare wood. Be careful sanding cabinets. A lot of them are not solid wood. Usually just the doors are.

You can stain over stain with gel stain with little prep. You can go darker but not lighter.

I would not remove the stain, because they make plenty of stains that can go right over it, especially since you're wanting to go darker. I had two corner hutches that were in a yellow oak stain and I found a stain that was darker and had shellac in it, and it worked beautifully. :D

Use a gel stain if going darker. Do not strip them with that much wood it would be a nightmare and never look right. Gel stain them.

I used minwax poly shades. Lightly sand the cabinets and apply the stain with a soft cloth or old t-shirt. No need to sand down completely, because you are going darker.
