What type of paint is best to use on a child’s desk and bookcase. I prefer a matte look, but want it to be durable. Thank you, in advance!

Here's a good post with pros and cons for different kinds of paints you can use on furniture: https://refreshliving.us/best-paint-furniture/

I notice that a lot of people use chalk paint, which has a nice matte finish, but this post notes that, without a top coat, it wears off too quickly. But I think as long as you add a top coat, you'd be okay with it.

Chalk paint requires no prep. I have never used it. I use acrylic latex paint. Just lightly sand to remove any shine. Prime with Kilz primer then paint your color. Seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane.

I coat my paint jobs in clear polyurethane, many coats and it is durable and cleanable. I have furniture, including an antique old fashioned kids desk and a claw foot dining room table that were refinished in the eighties and still look like they were just stripped and restained. I believe the dining room table was done with three or four thin coats for extra durability. You should be able to get the matte finish that you want for the top coats.

I have painted (repainted) several dressers and tables using chalk paint. It gives a matte look. No prep & no smell, easy to use and can be done inside. Easy cleanup with water. Just make sure you use a sealer (wax) or clear coat to prevent chipping, and it will last. I did my kitchen area workspace where my home computer is with chalk paint, and a good 2 or 3 (thin) coats of wax on the top and it's held up for 2 years now. I like the Americana wax (clear) from Home Depot and it's reasonably priced.
