What do I plant in a small dirt area on either side of my front porch?

I have a small dirt area on either side of my front porch. The area faces due east. The south side gets all the morning sun, the north side get none. I haven't had any luck planting anything that grows evenly. Suggestions?

HI David. Have you tried a Hosta? I am not sure what your zone is but they are easy to grow any where so are Day Lilies. Good Luck!

Hi David, you might consider ferns. They do well in shaded areas.

Try ferns because they will grow in the shade under trees they do not requite a lot of sun. We have sword fern growing under two trees.

Not sure of your zone but along with the mentioned hosta and ferns, you could try bergenia and astilbe. I have had success with Lady’s Mantle and pulmonaria as well. And then there is the often avoided (because of their invasive nature) but very attractive goutweed.

Trick is in remembering to water the plants if they are under roof overhangs as often rain doesn’t get to them. Good luck.

Yes, the areas are both under roof eaves. I will look all those plants up. Thank you
