How do I restore the finish on my dining room table?

During our recent move, our dining room table was wrapped in a blanket and shrink wrap plastic by the moving company. Due to the heat (June), it appears dull in many places. I've tried wood polish. Murphy's Oil Soap was also tried. Nothing has renewed the original gloss to the surface. It's a good piece of furniture. Help!

I don't think it should have been wrapped in the shrink wrap. It probably caused the problem of heat buildup that went through the blanket and the blanket caused the finish to dull. Moving companies have insurance for damage to items that they move. Contact them and they should repair it or pay to have you take it somewhere to have the finish repaired. The varnish or whatever the finish coat is was damaged. My mom once washed a cotton throw rug and put it on the trunk of her car to dry and it caused dulling of the clear coat in spots on her trunk. I would contact the moving company first before you repair it yourself.
It sounds like the shrink wrap melted onto the surface. Check with a furniture company and your insurance for advice.

A similar issue happened to my table while in storage. I thought I was being smart to protect the table top and placed a waffle patterned carpet pad over the table plus a moving blanket over that. A year later, Imagine my distress when I realized the waffle pad had actually imbedded into the polyurethane coating of the table! I had to completely sand down to bare wood to get rid of the grid pattern. For the finish I applied two coats of teak oil followed by two coats of poly acrylic.
