How can I get a grassy backyard?

I’ve planted Saint Augustine in my backyard twice...it has died both times. What do I need to do. I want a grassy backyard. I do have 2 large live oaks but thought this type of grass likes shade.

What type of grass should I grow beneath this oak?
depends as well on your grow zone, and yes, St. Aug. is more shade tolerant than some other varieties of lawn turf, but no grass will grow well in dense shade; you'd be better off with a low growing ground cover ( no mowing!) .. Ajuga works well in southern areas, needs moisture/shade ... you may want to check with a good local greenhouse ( not a 'big box store' that just sells plants in season ) or your Agricultural Agency for suggestions appropriate to your area
I exhort you to contact your local agriculture extension office and consult with a master gardner about this. They can advise what type of grass is best for your area, near and under those tree. They will also be able to test soil .
Also note that oak trees are known to emit Alleopathic compounds which make it very difficult for other plants to grow, nearby. Mention your oaks when discussing your situation, and take photos to your local nursery, for best advice, pertinent to your locale.
