Sue,. It depends on where the leak is. Is it at a joint, or sometimes you think it is. Wrap the pipe with brown paper, the kind you get at the supermarket. See where the leak is coming from. You can use Flex Seal, or plumbing tape to cover the leak. It's usually at the joints, where the leak is. Aloha!

Where is the pipe? Depends on where and why it is leaking. If the only issue is the leak you can wrap it with special repair/mending tape from the plumbing department at a hardware store. Leaking at a joint...might need a plumber. Hope this helps.

We have had luck using pieces of hose and hose clamps. We lived in a turn of the century house and seemed to get at least one leak a year in the basement and we repaired some with that and we never had to replace any. It was a rent house and sometimes had to wait for days for someone to come fix them. At least the pipes were all exposed in the completely unfinished and cold basement. We lived there for 14 years and the "fixes" were still there when we moved out. Make sure you check for water damage to walls, floor, or wherever the leak is so that you don't end up with mold/mildew problems down the road. Sometimes it is better to bite the bullet and at least have a pro check it out, they may be able to tell if some pipes are showing signs of being ready to fail and can replace with new that is a lot less likely to fail down the road. We needed to replace tub/shower hardware due to constant dripping from the faucet. We had trouble getting into the opening in the closet to replace and called a friend who is a plumber to help us out. He found the pipes leading to the hardware wasn't in good shape and he replaced then with the new flexible hose they use. If he hadn't found the failing pipes, we would have a real mess on our hands in the near future.
