How should I paint my fireplace?

Fireplaces normally have neutral colors. I believe a white fireplace adds rich character to a home; however, not with white walls. Bricks absorb paint, so it will definitely need multiple coats of paint for full coverage.

You’ll need to decide if you’re going to paint the mortar or not.

Also, the hearth color needs to be ash-clean/up friendly.

Consider a custom wall/hanging. If I can find a picture of mine, I’ll post it. Mine was for a 2-story stairwell wall.

This is a good way to tie into the colors of your sofa, accent pieces and other artwork.

What I did:

I bought two long bamboo window shades, cut off the top of one, hot melt glued the stitching on the back to keep it from raveling and then took very fine wire & wired it to the bottom of the top one- to make it very very long.

This material gave me a forgiving surface to wire, glue & foam tape my “artwork” to.

Then I put a very large piece of bamboo at the top & bottom, like an Asian Art Scroll.

On the back of the top one, I made a heavy gauge wire hanging strap, that hung off of the screws I put into the studs. (Your case is masonry nails)

I attached a dowel hanger for an Obi (Japanese kimono sash) and one could hang any tapestry or interesting artwork on the dowel concept. It was about 3/4 of the way up to the top. I never “cut the art in half” as it is bad Feng Shui.

With more fine wire, I attached silk flowers that were Japanese maple tree leaves 🍁

The edges were asymmetrically placed 8x10 mounted photos of Japanese koi ponds I’ve visited. That’s because the Obi isn’t very wide.

Either rent scaffolding or hire a professional painter who will provide scaffolding. You can do a wash of paint or regular paint job with full coverage. The painter should clean any areas that need it and will probably use a primer too.

Be sure to use primer, then paint

Try looking up lime wash paint technique. It’s very diy friendly and and virtually goof proof.

Try a white wash before committing to painting the whole thing.

3 parts water to 1 part white paint, roll it on and then wipe it off. It will soften the look and color of the brick.
