Best solution depends on which type of carpet you are trying to clean & how carpet is made/woven. Natural fiber,synthetic,Berber(tightly woven) etc..

Whatever DIY method you choose to use, try it in an inconspicuous corner first. Some dye will run. I used a DIY mix with vinegar in it and it ran.
