I would never use chalk paint on kitchen cabinets - even if you use wax on top. Chalk paint is a lazy way of painting something and does not wear well especially kitchen cabinets that need to be cleaned frequently.
Wash with TSP, paint with a good quality primer then a quality paint. Don't short yourself and use a paint with primer in it.
The suggestions about oil based paint and primer will work, however, it’s not lazy to chalk paint. Your kitchen cabinets can definitely be chalk painted and sealed, and will look great. Use a high quality chalk paint, I suggest Annie Sloan. Clean the cabinets very well first, and make any repairs they may need. Then paint your cabinets, if you go lighter over dark cabinets you’ll need several coats. Then seal them, but I don’t recommend using wax. Use a quality polycrylic or the Annie Sloan lacquer to seal them. To clean, magic erasers or mild soap and water will work fine.

It is super easy to paint with Dixie Belle:
Step one: Clean with White Lightning
Step two: If the surface is slippery, apply two coats of Slick Stick
Step three: Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Step four: Use Gator Hide for a water-repellent finish
