The best and easiest way to update your kitchen is with paint. If you paint the walls a light color, the room will appear bigger. Stainless steel appliances are the trend right now. But that doesn't mean you have to go out and buy new appliances. You can spray paint them or put sheets of stainless steel on them. Like wrapping a gift. You can also paint your cabinets, if necessary. Your entire kitchen will look updated with just these 3 changes. Good luck.

You don't say what your budget is, but I am assuming you are seeking a low-cost way to update rather than seeking to pay someone to rip out and replace your kitchen. Thus, my suggestions are for the average skilled DIYer:

1 - Replace flooring cheaply by using peel and stick flooring in either planks or squares. To make it adhere better, use a layer of tile adhesive before peeling and sticking. There are all kinds of peel ans stick tile, from super cheap to somewhat costly. Choose the best quality you can afford in a neutral color/pattern.

2 - Improve existing cabinets. Remove the doors (label them!) and clean the doors and hardware really, really well. Upgrade the door finish with either paint or colored polyurethane. If you're really creative, you could even consider decoupaging the doors, especially if there's a flat insert sort of section in the middle of the doors. Rehang the doors and add new door and drawer pulls.

3 - Upgrade the countertops. Replacing them is best (laminate is less costly than other materials and they make some really good looking laminate these days), but you can use one of the painting kits or concrete kits if you can't afford to replace the countertops.

4 - Improve the backsplash. Depending on what is there now, you can paint, tile, use stick on vinyl tiles, Fasade plastic panels, or textured wallpaper.

Check out places like ReStore or eBay or a local architectural salvage to get drawer and door pulls for little money. Or use thrift store utensils like forks and spoons bent and drilled to make your own unusual pulls. If you live in a place that has a surplus and salvage store like Ollies, check them out for things like hardware and flooring.
