The router is my favorite power tool. Your best bet is to buy a router table. It is a metal frame (think table saw) that the router attaches to from below. You will be able to use a fence to guide your wood over the cutter and make precise grooves. If you don't go this way you can clamp your work piece to a table and use a guide to help you make straight cuts but the clamps can get in your way. It really depends on how much you plan to use your router.
