Hi Diana, if you don't have the plans for the home, you can check with you local city or town hall and they can tell you if the builders used "load bearing" walls when your house was built, even so, you can put a reinforcement post or pillar in off to the side I would think, but please check.
Usually bearing walls are in the center of the building located directly underneath the roof ridge line. You really should have an structural engineer to take at look at this before removing it.

You can still remove a load bearing wall provided you provide structural support. You would need a structural engineer to determine what is appropriate, and need to pull permits and schedule inspections to follow local Building codes.
