Spray paint would be the best. Acrylic latex paint can crack or peel.
If you are stenciling a vinyl floor you can use the small bottles of acrylic paint. You can also use chalk paint but I have better luck stenciling with the small craft bottles of acrylic paint. You would have to prime and paint your floor first, then stencil your pattern, and then finish with a top coat(s) of poly. Use polycrylic so the poly doesn't yellow over time. If you are trying to stencil on vinyl for another project you probably aren't going to find any paint that would stick in the long term.
My stencils turn out the best when I use very little paint and a foam roller. The foam roller should almost be dry. Off load it onto a paper plate. I've used acrylic, latex and chalk paint. But I've never stenciled vinyl. I would try chalk paint though, because it sticks well.
Hi Linda, Paints formulated to adhere to vinyl are made from 100 percent acrylic or urethane and acrylic resin blends. Most paint companies offer these types of paints, labeled as "exterior paint." If you are painting vinyl siding, color is also important.
